Message from Tourism Secretary Alberto A. Lim
It is my pleasure to greet the members of the tourism industry as I take over the helm of the Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) under the administration of His Excellency Benigno S. Aquino III.
We intend to launch a spectrum of programs on an integrated and sound approach to tourism planning, product development, marketing and services that would further strengthen our competitive edge in the Asia-Pacific region and promote our country’s rich diversity.
We see tourism as one of the engines of economic development that will propel our nation towards the change we all aspire for. And we will take a fresh look at our tourism strategy and search for innovative ideas to invigorate our tourism industry.
We are renovating our website and other affiliate online presence to reflect this new direction. We welcome fresh ideas and inputs from all sectors. You may email us at webmaster@tourism.gov.ph. Together, let’s make this nation a world-class tourism haven.
Mabuhay ang sambayanang Pilipino!

CEBU CITY – Banking on the implementation of the Tourism Act or RA 9593, the Department of Tourism (DoT) is forecasting a 15% jump in tourist arrivals by year-end in top tourist destinations in the country.
Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said the department is optimistic it will meet its target with the increase in movement of domestic travelers, boosted with a recovery in foreign travel.
Tourism Undersecretary for Planning and Promotions Eduardo Jarque Jr. has said that the international and local travel markets have regained their confidence in the global economy, which could result in more activity in business and travel.
“We see the MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) market growing again this year,” Jarque said. “The tourism market will be more upbeat and because the local sector has stood strong amid the crisis compared to other countries, the advantage is on us.”
In an industry report released recently by the DoT the department stated that it foresees coordinated and integrated efforts of government and the private sector to expand current capacity, increase tourist demand, enhance tourism revenues, and create more employment opportunities in tourist destinations.
Cebu has emerged as the number one tourism destination in the Philippines in 2009, with total tourist traffic arrival for the year hitting 1.61 million, or a 1.2 percent increase from the previous year’s arrival figures.
Aside from Cebu, other top destinations in the country are Camarines Sur, Metro Manila, Baguio City, Davao City, Boracay Island, Cagayan de Oro City, Zambales, Bohol, Puerto Princesa City, Camiguin, Cagayan Valley, Negros Oriental and Ilocos Norte.
The report also underscored that as of the end of 2009, the DoT has endorsed 28 new tourism projects worth P36.3 billion. These projects are estimated to employ 15,567 persons once operational.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised the H1N1 virus, commonly called swine flu, to the 5th level on a 6-level scale, after the virus has spread to more than a dozen countries, indicating that an influenza pandemic is imminent.
There has been no reported case of H1N1 flu in the Philippines, and is thus declared as an H1N1-free destination.
The government is closely monitoring all incoming travelers in six international airports, seaports and other airports servicing chartered flights with thermal scanners to detect body temperatures. Special isolation areas have also been put up in these ports to quarantine travelers exhibiting flu symptoms, especially those coming from places with reported cases of H1N1 flu.
The government further required public and private hospitals to be on heightened alert and to monitor and report suspicious cases of H1N1 flu. Regional tourism offices have been instructed to stay vigilant and work in close coordination with concerned government agencies in monitoring H1N1 cases.
No cancellations on tour packages to the country were reported by the tourism industry.

Boracay Makes List of World's Best Beaches
BORACAY, Aklan: Internet search engine Yahoo! and popular website AskMen.com included this resort island on their list of the world's 10 best beaches.
Yahoo! ranked Boracay seventh while AskMen.com, which claims more than five million site visitors monthly, placed Boracay on the eighth spot.
According to Web traffic analysis companies, Yahoo! has been the most visited website on the Internet, with more than 412 million unique users.
AskMen.com, on the other hand, is a Canadian-based, free online men's Web portal. Its sections feature topics that are pertinent to men. Among its sections are Fashion & Lifestyle, Health & Sports and Dating & Love.
With this positive exposure in the worldwide Web, Gov. Carlito Marquez of Aklan is confident that business will be good in this resort island.
Boracay is famous for its powdery white sand, pristine waters and lush tropical forests.
In coming out with their lists, Yahoo! and AskMen.com emphasized the "numerous positive feedback" they received from website readers and the wide range of available attractions each chosen beach offers.
In late 1980s, this resort island was named by two travel magazines as one of the world's top 10 beaches, too. The title disappeared after the issue on coliform contamination hit this resort island in mid-1990s.
Marquez attributed Boracay's positive image abroad to the Department of Tourism's aggressive promotional activities.
Boracay's two primary tourism beaches, White Beach and Bulabog Beach, are located on opposite sides of the island's narrow central area. White Beach faces westwards and Bulabog Beach faces eastwards. The island also has several other beaches.
White Beach is the main tourism beach. It is a bit over four kilometers long and is lined with resorts, hotels, lodging houses, restaurants, and other tourism-related businesses.
In the central portion, for about two kilometers, there is a footpath known as the beachfront path separating the beach itself from the establishments located along it.
North and south of the beachfront path, beachfront establishments do literally front along the beach itself.
Several roads and paths connect the beachfront path with Boracay's main road, a vehicular road which runs the length of the island. At the extreme northern end of White Beach, a footpath runs around the headland there and connects White Beach with Diniwid Beach.
Across the island from White Beach is Bulabog Beach, a secondary tourism beach and Boracay's main windsurfing and kiteboarding area. -- Panay News ###
DOT prepares for the June 12 Philippine Independence Day celebration
Preparations are underway for this year’s celebration of the Philippine Independence day on June 12, 2007 with the theme “Sama-sama tayo, tungo sa pag-asenso.”
The celebration according to Department of Tourism Secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano was divided into three parts: the Watawat, Kalayaan and the Kabayanihan modules. The first module will be focused on the Flag Day on May 28 at Alapan Historical landmark in Imus Cavite. This module will also cover other supplemental activities meant to highlight the importance of the Philippine flag. There will be a series of flag days every Monday which will start on May 21 to June 30. Streamers, flags, buntings will likewise be put up in all government buildings, schools public parks, malls, hospitals and other institutions.
Kalayaan module emphasizes the high point of the celebration on June 12 which is the Parada ng Kalayaan at the Quirino Grandstand to be participated in by all government agencies. This will also allow other historical places to replicate or do other related activities like the simultaneous flag-raising and wreath-laying rites that will be done in Rizal Park in Luneta, Aguinaldo Shrine in Cavite, Barasoain Church in Malolos, Bulacan, Bonifacio National Monument, in Caloocan City, Pinaglabanan Shrine in San Juan, Cebu City and Davao City.
Part of the Kalayaan module is the Barangay Kalayaan sa Rizal Park. The lagoon area will be transformed into a typical Philippine village where the country’s best products and attractions can be seen. The One town, One Product (OTOP) program of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) will be the high point of this village.
Kabayanihan module highlights the birthday of the national hero Dr. Jose Rizal on June 19 and the Founding of the City of manila on June 24 up to June 30. It includes as well the heroism and patriotism of all Filipinos from the early revolts through the revolution against the American colonizers and up to World War II.
To support this module, the Philippine Historical Association will hold a Colloquium on the Proclamation of the Philippine Independence at the Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite.
More North Americans Visiting
It’s all systems go for many Americans and Canadians on their group and family tours to visit the Philippines and undertake various activities in different destinations, even after the yuletide, during the first quarter of 2007.
“Based on recent information from the Philippine Department of Tourism’s (PDOT) overseas offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York, several golf, retiree, business and medical groups have confirmed their bookings for the yuletide season and onwards to the first quarter of 2007. These travelers have chosen the Philippines as their tropical escape from the harsh winter in Canada and the United States or to be with their relatives and friends even after Christmas,” JunJun Jorda-Apo, head of the PDOT’s Team North America, revealed.
“December is a traditionally busy time for the arrival of North American travelers to the country, but with the number of tour groups arriving for the first quarter of 2007 is an indication that the Philippines has remained a preferred holiday destination among Americans and Canadians. We hope arrivals for the rest of 2007 will continue to increase as this would translate to more earnings for the economy,” Jorda-Apo said.
In line with PDOT’s “Out-of-the-Box” promo, which the second phase of its “The Philippines: Explore. Experience. Return.” program, visitors from the US and Canada are enjoined to log on to www.experiencephilippines.ph to know about exciting tour packages and how one can win fabulous prizes including a condo unit at St. Francis Towers in Ortigas Center. Promo runs until December 31, 2007.
According to Tourism Attache Rene delos Santos of PDOT-San Francisco, more than a thousand Philippine-American military retirees from all over the US will have a week sojourn to pay homage to their departed comrades in the military shrines of Luzon and an overnight stay on historic Corregidor Island.
The month of February 2007 will see groups of businessmen like the members of the newly-formed Pilipino-American Chamber of Commerce of Oregon on their vacation in Metro Manila, Subic and Baguio through the efforts of Director Rene de los Santos of PDOT San Francisco.
Golfers are headed for the top golf courses of the Philippines to practise their swings. The first three months of 2007 will see hundreds of these aficionados from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Nevada, San Diego and other areas of Southern California as well as Canada, New York, New Jersey, Greater Chicago and other Midwest cities on the greens of Metro Manila, Tagaytay, Cavite, Batangas and Cebu with sidetrips to Pagsanjan, Quezon, Puerto Galera, Palawan, Boracay and Bohol.
These golfers come from the Eagles High Golf Club, Phil-Am Amateur Golf Club, Tamaraw Golf Club, FM Golf, Filipino League of Golfers, Four City Golfers Group, Philippine Golf Fiesta of Los Angeles, Diners Golf Classic, International Alliance Golf Club, Philippine Golf Classic II of New York, Philippine Community of Southern New Jersey and the CAA Golf Group of Canada.
Director Anne Cuevas of PDOT-Los Angeles said that although most of these visiting golfers have their own club tournaments in the Philippines’ finest golf courses, some will participate in the 1st FiVR and Ambassador Champions’ Cup to be held at the Splendido, Aoki, Eagle Ridge, Sherwood Hills, Midlands and the Riviera Golf Clubs.
“America-Asia, one of the biggest tour wholesalers for Chinese-Americans, has finally included the Philippines in their packages. Their retailer-travel agents will be visiting Metro Manila and Southern Tagalog as part of the week-long familiarization trip for retailer-travel agents,” Cuevas enthused.
Americans from the Midwest are also gearing up for the “WOW Philippines” tour program, where the PDOT in Chicago headed by Tourism Attache Vernie Morales, has arranged very special and affordable tour packages for them to experience the warmth of the Filipinos and wonders of the Philippines.
Morales likewise stated that the Medical Mission Foundation of Michigan numbering more than a hundred will arrive in January in three batches and will proceed to Bataan and Boracay for cataract surgeries with a pre- and post-mission stay in Metro Manila. A first-timer group of about a hundred mainstream, non-ethnic Americans will arrive in the Philippines mid-December this year to celebrate Christmas for their project, Illinois Conference Mission Trip “Promise for Palawan,” where they will conduct a medical mission, build a chapel and hold evangelical meetings as well as spend the New Year in Metro Manila. Two hundred members of the Philippine Medical Associations of Chicago and Michigan will visit Ilocos and Palawan to extend medical assistance for several weeks. About three hundred practitioners of the Philippine Medical Society of Northern California will have their missions in Naga and neighboring Bicol towns this January.
“Aside from undertaking their primary purpose for coming here, the itineraries of these groups include time for sightseeing, relaxation and enrichment in each of the destination they will visit to be capped by a Metro Manila tour,” Morales added.

As an initial offering, PDOT will launch "The Philippines: Explore. Experience. Return." program during the Fiesta Filipina celebrations at the Civic Center Plaza in San Francisco, California on June 10 & 11, 2006 in time for the Philippine Independence Day, which will be televised on the "WOWOWEE" show over The Filipino Channel.
This program has two-phase promos. The first phase is the "Free Flight Giveaway" promo, where 250 Americans, Canadians and Global Filipinos residing in North America will have a chance to travel to the Philippines roundtrip -- for free! They can win balikbayan boxes full of prizes during the second phase "Out-of-the-Box" promo to be started later this year. All they have to do is to log in the new portal www.experiencephilippines.ph to know the contest rules and begin earning raffle points.
"The flight is on us. The vacation is yours to explore and experience," enthuses Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano.
According to Durano, PDOT worked with the local travel agents in Manila as well as those in the United States and Canada to come up with attractive and reasonably-priced Philippine tour packages, which promises to entice the American and Canadian winners of the "Free Flight Giveaway" promo to the Philippines as well as a big chunk of Global Filipinos to visit their motherland and win balikbayan boxes loaded with prizes through the "Out-of-the-Box" promo.
With these packages, North America-based residents can choose from any of the exciting tour packages on adventure, heritage, beach holiday, culinary, dive, golf, health and wellness, medical tourism among others. The inclusions and rates in these packages can be provided by the participating travel agents, who are listed in the new portal.

Get ready to soak as you go white water rafting along the wild waters of Cagayan de Oro River for the thrill of your life. Then, a visit to the Malasag Ecotourism Gardens and the Dole Pineapple Plantation in Bukidnon will cap your day.

Locally known as butanding, you can actually swim along and interact with these harmless and gentle giants of the deep which measure from 15 to 40 feet long. The tour also comes with a visit to the firefly sanctuary, a river trek and picnic at Bayugin Falls.

Varied sports activities at the former American air force base of Clark, now an economic zone in Pampanga and the nightlife at nearby Angeles City are top draws in the area.
Next day, gear up for an island hopping adventure as you visit the famed Hundred Islands in Pangasinan, where the Shrine of Our Lady of Manaoag is a pilgrimage site.
If you feel like going on a journey of culture and traditions -– then the Heritage Tours are just right for you. The provinces of Cebu and Bohol -- considered as the Queen and Jewels of the South -- are replete with memoirs of the country's history.

Be a witness to a part of the Cordillera Rice Terraces acclaimed as the "Eighth Wonder of the World" and a UNESCO World Heritage Site built over 2,000 years ago. Aside from the rice terraces in Banaue town, one will be fascinated by the stone-walled terraces of Hapao and Mayoyao, the amphitheater terraces of Batad among other unique rice terraces in the vast Cordillera region.
On the way to these rice terraces, one can have a cool swim at the Tappiyah Waterfalls or a hot bath at the Ducligan Springs as well as marvel at the picturesque scenery and wholesome communities of the Tam-an, Bocos, Batad, Bangaan, Poitan, Hapao and Ducligan Villages.
The next day, tour the quaint and picturesque town of Sagada and see ancient burial caves with mummified coffins. Peek through authentic artifacts and photos from the mountain tribes with a visit to the Bontoc Museum.
If you opt for the colors and flavors of North Philippines, then you're headed for historic Ilocandia. Visit coastal town of Pagudpud known as the Boracay of the North – where you could swim in its crystal-clear waters or beachcomb along coconut-rimmed shores.
